4. Consistent structure and navigation

If your site contains a mishmash of page navigation formats, confusing overall site structure, dead links, or content that doesn’t deliver what links promise, your search engine rankings will suffer. In contrast, consistent navigation and structure from page to page makes it easier for search engine spiders to “crawl” your site and transmit that information back to the search engine – which gives you positive marks.

For example, use:

  • Consistent navigation bars on the top, side and bottom of every page.
  • “Breadcrumbs” – a line of visible navigation atop pages (Home > Politics > Cincinnati Mayor Runs for Reelection) that clues users to where they are, and that allows them to click back through your site structure.
