The Center for Citizen Media created this report on how traditional news organizations are encouraging audience involvement.  The report was written by Lisa Williams, founder of H2otown and Placeblogger, with Center for Citizen Media Director Dan Gillmor and journalist Jane Mackay.

News organizations are recognizing that their audiences are more than empty receptacles waiting to be filled with information selected an editorial priesthood—more than consumers whose only interaction with the media is to buy what is sold, or not.
