Meet the New Media Makers
– and the Foundations that Make their News Sites Possible

From investigative journalism projects to ethnic news services, from community news venues to niche reporting sites, new media makers are launching news and information initiatives that are increasingly attracting support from community, family and other foundations.

From 2005 to today, J-Lab has tracked $248,524,603 million in grants awarded to at least 308 news projects in 25 states and the District of Columbia. In the searchable database below, you can find these grants by the name of the foundation that issued funding, by the name of the news project that received grant support, or by state.

This database includes funding only for news and information projects. It does not include funding for public broadcasting programs, for the underwriting of documentaries, for journalism training or student news services.

Also be sure to take a look at Chuck Lewis and the Investigative Reporting Workshop's report on New Journalism Ecosystems around the country.
